Winter's best immunity boosting elixirs

by Marion Piper on Saturday 9 June 2018

It tends to happen very quickly. First, you experience the steady rise of the sniffles – then, the sneezing. Before you know it, everyone you pass on the street (and in your office) seems to be struck down by the seasonal cold or flu.

It can be tempting to turn to antibiotics and other medications when things get rough, but you can give your body a fighting chance this winter with an immunity-boost from Mother Nature.

We’ve searched high and low for the best immunity boosting elixirs to help you survive this flu season and spoiler alert – most of them are in your pantry already!

Ginger and lemon

This classic cold-busting combo has the heat and health to help your body fight off those unwanted nasties. Ginger will detoxify your system and lemon has vitamin C to help reduce any swelling or inflammation.
For an early morning treat, bring some water to the boil on the stove and add in a few tablespoons of diced ginger, some slices of fresh lemon and a dash of honey for sweetness. As far natural remedies go, this one is delicious!

Turmeric

The king of anti-inflammation, turmeric has been used for centuries as a healing herb. What makes turmeric so amazing during the cooler months is its active component, curcumin, which when combined with other flu-fighting ingredients like garlic and Echinacea, supports the body’s immune system.
You could try including some fresh turmeric in your morning smoothie, or even add it to a few cups of water with ginger and lemon, bring it to the boil and enjoy a warming elixir.

Apple cider vinegar

This winter it pays to make apple cider vinegar your new best friend. It’s packed full of health benefits like easing joint pain, aiding digestion and improving the quality of your sleep.
So when your immune system is having a hard time, try adding a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a cup of hot water to drink first thing in the morning. It may take you a few days to get used to the taste (it’s very strong initially), but it’s also been proven to help balance the body’s pH levels too. Is there anything this liquid can’t do?!

Garlic

Not just useful for keeping those pesky vampires away, this humble healer is one of the best natural flu-fighters. It’s recommended that you take 2 to 4 grams (approximately 2 to 4 cloves) of garlic each day to effectively boost your immunity.
If the thought of munching on that much garlic doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can buy garlic capsules, or use garlic powder in soup recipes to get your health fix.

Take care of yourself

To stay fit and healthy this winter, try any and all of the above remedies to see what will work for you, but don’t forget the basics. Get plenty of rest, uninterrupted sleep each night, and some moderate exercise a few times a week. That way you’ll give your body the best possible chance to fight off the cold and flu germs when they inevitably try to attack.
